Have you ever heard about anthracite metal? If not, you should listen to Znafelriff, a band from Svalbard in Norway. The band was formed back in 2001 in Svalbard and released a demo in 2002, but then a long silence began. During this time some members of the band moved to Berlin, Germany. After ten years, the band returned with a new EP The Desolate Years. In 2014 the band was gathered again in Svalbard and a new EP, Ruin, came out in 2015.

From the very first note of Ruin, It is evident that the purpose of the band is to have a raw sound; Znafelriff are definitely inspired by the old school, but not only, as we can infer from the use of acoustic parts, as in “Abgrund”. The band's style combines effectively black metal and dark metal, and this is the reason why Znafelriff call their genre anthracite metal. The themes addressed in the lyrics include nature, Satanism, darkness, fear and decay. The Norwegian guys know definitely how to create an eerie atmosphere, but they need to do something more if they want to be really impressive.
