The lovers of atmospheric black metal will certainly find their match in this EP by Wounds, a solo-project from Canada launched in 2009; the identity of the founder is shrouded in mystery, though. The Valley of Death is the debut EP of the act and it is really excellent if we think that it is the debut release ever by this act. Not only the compositions themselves, but also the sound is studied carefully, and these are signs of maturity and awareness. On the other hand we should not forget that this EP comes six years after the formation of the band, which means that there has been a growth process in the meantime. The Valley of Death is not definitely an innovative release, and perhaps not even the best release within atmospheric black metal, but it can surely and effectively conflate dark and dreamlike atmospheres. In short, it is an interesting release and I would recommend it to atmospheric black metal fans.
