After an acoustic folk album a la Ulver, and a live album, the leading black metal band in the UK is back with a new album. The Reckoning Dawn marks the return of Manchester's Winterfylleth to the style that has enabled them to obtain a respectable niche in the international black metal scene, a return also sealed by an excellent cover of Enslaved's “Woden”. The album features many of the typical elements of the British band's sound made of relentless riffs in a melodic, evocative, atmospheric context. While this is certainly merit, on the other hand this can also be seen as a drawback. The album is certainly magnificent, but at the same time it does not present anything really new, except that it is a return to black metal. There is certainly more maturity and greater artistic awareness, the songs are well structured and arranged. One can say: when you love the sound of a band, what is better than being able to continue listening to that sound with all the above improvements? Well, as Friar Lawrence said to Romeo, "There art thou happy"!
