Stockholm-based Vananidr, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge, and many updates need to be provided. Vananidr, who last year was a solo-project by Andreas Eriksson, is now a trio and has released two new albums. But let's proceed in order! Just seven months after the debut album, Vananidr released the sophomore album Road North which actually consists of old material composed before 2018; therefore, Anders was once again responsible for all the instruments. A couple of days ago, Vananidr released the third album Damnation, and this time Anders is supported by a guitarist and a drummer. Both albums provide hefty and relentless black metal, with a melodic element added by the constant presence of a lead guitar that plays the main hook over a massive rhythmic guitar. Here and there, you will hear Mayhem vibes, especially on the track “Damnation”. Well constructed songs with engaging riffs and a great deal of variety in arrangements and tempo-changes makes both the albums pretty damn addicting. Both Road North and Damnation are over the top masterpieces, and I could already consider Damnation as one of the best albums in 2020.
