American melodic black metal outfit Uada have made an impressive and fast rise by establishing themselves as a breakthrough band in the recent international black metal scene. Widely anticipated, their new third album Djinn has recently hit the shelves of record stores. “Djinn” is an ancient Arabic word for supernatural creatures or demons; this gives you the idea of the dark themes that revolve around paganism, obsessions, cabala, esotericism. However when you press the play button, the first thing you'll hear is a rocky, almost punk riff that evolves then into sweet, bright melodies; the whole album is more or less on the same tone. If you are expecting a true black metal album, then you are getting the wrong end of the stick. Djinn is a generic extreme metal album, and at times it's not even extreme; seen in this perspective, the album is really excellent, but forget the dark and death-exuding atmospheres of proper black metal. On the contrary, the general mood is almost happy and bright, while the sound is neat and polished. Listen to it when you have had a bad day and it will put you in a good mood!
