Stortregn (Switzerland): “Evocation of Light”

When you press play and Stortregn's Evocation of Light unfolds to your ears, one might believe to be in the presence of a Swedish band, given Stortregn's typically Swedish melodic death / black metal sound. Additionally, “stortregn” is a Swedish word meaning heavy rain, but nevertheless Stortregn are a Swiss band from Geneva. The band was formed in 2005 as Divine’s Smile, but the moniker was changed shortly after first to Addict Repulsion and then to Stortregn. Evocation of Light is their fifth album, and in my opinion is clearly inspired by the Swedish melodic death / black metal tradition, especially early Dissection and Sacramentum. In this regard, perhaps it is not just a coincidence that the artwork is a creation by Kristian Wåhlin, aka Necrolord, author of the artwork of Storm of the Light's Bane by Dissection and Far Away from the Sun by Sacramentum. I might be wrong, but in my opinion a certain ambition to be Swedish, so to speak, is evident. In conclusion, Evocation of Light is a good album, masterfully performed and produced, but it lacks originality. Of course if you love that type of vibes, then this album is for you.
