Launched in 2006 as a one-man band by Vladimir, joined in 2014 by drummer Aeargh, Russian Sivyj Yar is now an institution of atmospheric black metal, and their sixth album Горе (Grief) has just landed in record stores. Горе (Grief) has that Eastern European charm that only Sivyj Yar can offer, but it is at the same time contemplative as in the best tradition of the genre without ever being too cloying, a mistake that many atmospheric black metal bands make in my opinion. Also, another thing that is quite unique for the genre is the excellent production, apparently professional: crystal-clear sound, well-defined instruments, a bass that will make your high-speakers vibrate with power. Furthermore, the Russian duo shows that they know how to think out of the box as they experiment with unorthodox and almost avant-garde solutions. This album is, in conclusion, a must for fans of the genre!
