Rust are an Italian band from Turin with a long history passed through different stages and names. Formed first in 2001 as Lesmathor by Thordern, Loki and Hor, the band released soon the demo The Dark Goes On - Becomes Stranger. In the same year the band changed their name to October Rust and with the new moniker they released the demo Dusk Promenade in 2004; soon after the demo the band was discontinued. In 2015, however, the band was reformed with the new moniker Rust and finally the first album Urstoff arrived in 2018. We can say that the band has gone through various genres, one for each name: raw black metal, progressive melodic black metal, black death metal, respectively. I think the band have finally found their style that I would describe as black metal with influences and atmospheres of various kinds, such as prog, atmospheric, dark. Urstoff is an admirable example of harmonious musical synthesis, but also a mature and self-conscious album. Last but not least, production and technical performance are top-notch; we must not forget that all the members of Rust are expert musicians, some of them are also members of Enisum, another excellent Italian band that we have already talked about here. Do not miss this beautiful and profound album.
