I accidentally came across this album a few weeks ago and from the very first moment I was delighted with it, and now V.I.T.R.I.O.L by Pénitence Onirique is a kind of a drug for me. What amazes me is that Pénitence Onirique, from Autricum, France, are a first duo formed in 2015 and V.I.T.R.I.O.L, their debut album, and so far only release, is already a masterpiece; I did not find out so much about the two guys Bellovesos and Diviciacos and for all I know they only play in this band.
V.I.T.R.I.O.L is an atmospheric / melodic black metal album, full of pathos and poetry. There is no cliché, no platitudes here, on the contrary Pénitence Onirique infuse a unique feeling into their music, and are never repetitive, which results in the album being engaging and engrossing. Difficult to choose the best track, but my favorite is “Le Sel” where the dramatic initial arpeggio conveys a sense of agonizing desolation. Unfortunately my skills in French are not good so I'm not able to say exactly what the lyrics are about, since they are all in French.
V.I.T.R.I.O.L is an enthralling and even addictive album, and surely one of the top black metal releases of 2016.
