In some of my previous reviews, such as when reviewing Swedish bands like Grift, Grá or Mephorash, I pointed out that Swedish black metal is at the frontline and this split is yet another demonstration. It's really rare that a split is a masterpiece, but The Hidden God, this two track split between Swedish Orcivus and Excessum, is certainly one of those few.

Orcivus are a black metal band from Lidköping that I have followed for several years, ever since I saw them perform live in Stockholm a while ago; I think they are one of the best bands in the Swedish underground panorama, even though they are probably a bit unknown. For those who do not know, the mastermind of Orcivus is a certain Perditor, who is also the mastermind of Grift. The band has been silent since 2010, and therefore I was looking forward to listening to something new from them, so this split was happy news to me; this band was formed in 2007 and has two wonderful albums out, Consummatum Est and Est Deus in Nobis. Orcivus are responsible for the first track of the split “A Spark of the Sun”.

The second band of this split is Excessum, another Swedish black metal band from Smögen. Unlike Orcivus, Excessum were unknown to me before The Hidden God was released. As far as I know, Excessum were formed in 2001; they have released only one full length, Death Redemption in 2005. Excessum are responsible for the second song “Death and Initiation”.

As already mentioned, the split contains only two songs, but they are both outstanding; The Hidden God is a short but intense experience. I do not need to write much more, better for you to start the Bandcamp player below right away!
