New effort for Swedish musician and dancer Dagny Susanne and her project Nachtlieder hailing from Gothenburg. The new EP Views from the North Vol. 1 represents an earlier stage in Susanne’s musical discourse since it actually consists of old material never recorded before. Compared to the savage, convulsive, and down-tuned sound wall of the previous album Lynx, the new EP sounds more melodic, calm, and thoughtful. You will notice this from the very first song “In Solitude”, in which a guitar embroiders evocative melodies; the same type of atmosphere returns in the other songs too. The hoarse growl, hoarser than in the past I think, adds a raw feel to the whole. As for the sound, it is perhaps less powerful and aggressive, which may simply be due to the EP’s own specific atmosphere. At any rate, all the material on Views from the North Vol. 1 is expertly arranged and structured. The main themes are loneliness, as in “In Solitude”, nature as a mirror of the soul, as in “Avgrund”, and there is also a self-titled song. In a nutshell, Views from the North Vol. 1 is an excellent EP that lives up to Nachtlieder’s high reputation; hopefully, that there will also be a Vol. 2, as the title suggests. Recommended!
