Three years after their first full-length Seiðr, Mara, the project of mastermind Vindsval, is back with a new album titled Thursian Flame. I have already talked about Mara in the past, and I have also interviewed Vindsval, and it is therefore with great pleasure that I listen to their sophomore album because this album shows a clear improvement over the previous one. To begin with, Thursian Flame contains eight songs for a total playtime of little more than 32 minutes, and each song seems connected to the others almost as if creating a concept. On the other hand, the title Thursian Flame suggests quite clearly what the dominant theme is, namely Thursian chaosophy, a theme dear to Vindsval. Most importantly, the aspects that I find improved in this album are the personality and impact and above all the songwriting itself. While taking inspiration from classic Norwegian bands (I see analogies with groups like Helheim and Gehenna, but I can be wrong), Mara has found a style of its own that is constantly growing. In conclusion, to Mara's Thursian Flame is a solid and well-structured album that I especially recommend to those who love classic black metal.
