Canadian Maeskyyrn has that typical atmospheric profundity that is typical of many Canadian bands. From Montreal, Quebec, Maeskyyrn came to the fore in 2018 with the EP Thoughts of Shattered Dreams, followed by the full-length Interlude, in which the three Canadian lads best defined their sound and showed their potential. If we want to talk about genres, I would say that Interlude offers a large variety of colors on the band's sound palette. You will notice this already before pressing the Play button, noting that, out of nine tracks, five are interludes, intros, or outros embedded between longer, and proper black metal songs. The album actually combines raw and atmospheric black metal, sometimes even with depressive hues, such as in the slower or arpeggio sections that balance the faster ones. A good example of this is “The Slow Death of Years & Others”. The interludes intensify and emphasize this meditative side, and in this respect, I think “II” is particularly beautiful and in a Burzum mood. The whole album is an emotional and melancholic journey, and particularly intense is “Of Forests and Troubled Past”, in which nature and landscape are seen as a mirror of the soul. The singer showcases a good array of screams and growls, while the musicianship is decent. The essential production enhances the emotional quality of Maeskyyrn's music. In short, Interlude is the album for you who want to set out on an emotional journey in music!
