Inquisition did it again: they renewed themselves and have churned out a new album characterized by a different and atypical soundscape for the Colombian band. First of all, I assume that everyone knows Inquisition, one of the most important black metal bands of the last decade. The brand new album Black Mass for a Mass Grave is an album created by mature musicians who explore new territories and perhaps even new challenges after years of experience. Just to explain, its predecessor Bloodshed across the Empyrean Altar beyond the Celestial Zenith was much more aggressive: for example, the first track after the introduction, “From Chaos They Came”, starts right away with a very fast and furious riff and the growl is hoarse and abrasive; the slow parts are definitively few. Black Mass for a Mass Grave focuses a lot on the slow parts, and in general feels a lot more thoughtful and meditative. In short, I would say that it is an introspective and profound album, at least musically. Additionally, from a compositional point of view the album has beautiful arrangements and elegant solutions. Examples of songs that exemplify its mood are in my opinion “Luciferian Rays”, “Extinction of Darkness and Light”, “Necromancy through a Buried Cosmos”. In short, Black Mass for a Mass Grave is an album that may need to be discovered for you to truly savour it.
