After the legal dispute between Abbath and Demonaz over the rights to use the name Immortal that resulted in Abbath starting the new band Abbath, Immortal have released their first album under the guidance of Demonaz, Northern Chaos Gods. From the very first note of the opening eponymous track, the intent to continue the old glories of albums like Battles in the North and Blizzard Beasts is crystal clear; I think this is evident even and above all in some song titles, such as the third track “Gates to Blashyrk”, an explicit reference to “Blashyrk (Mighty Ravendark)”, last track of Battles in the North. Northern Chaos Gods fails however to really capture the listener's attention because it does not sound really new, it is not very original and it sounds like a reshuffle of old stuff. The good thing is that this album will make happy all the people who miss the old Immortal sound. However Northern Chaos Gods is a must only because it is an Immortal album.
