Digging into the maze of the underground, I found this interesting release from the USA. It is the debut album of a mysterious duo called Häxanu, whose origin is not more precisely known, except that it is led by one Alex Poole, apparently a leading figure in the American black metal underground since he is involved in a lot of projects. The album is titled Snare of All Salvation and comes with a cover full of arcane and occult symbols. In fact, if one reads the tracklist, titles such as “Materia Prima”, “Smaragdina”, “Anima Mundi” clearly show that the album must be a concept based on the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, also known as Smaragdine Tablet or Tabula Smaragdina, an ancient, mysterious text containing the secrets of the prima materia, the origin of the world, and probably also of the creation of the philosopher's stone. Musically speaking, Snare of All Salvation is rooted in the second wave of black metal, and in my opinion also Mgła. If we speak in terms of originality, this album will not impress you, but it has the quality of being compelling, direct, and sincere. In short a very good album!
