The Austrian masters of post-black metal Harakiri for the Sky celebrate this year their tenth anniversary with the excellent new album Maere, the title referring to a creature of Germanic folklore who haunts people's sleep, causing anxiety and breathlessness. Maere is a far-reaching album that also ranges to post-rock, as demonstrated for example by the clean guitars of “Sing for the Damage We've Done”. Beautifully written and performed, the album has in my opinion its weak point in J.J.'s dull growl that fails to highlight those parts that would require more intensity. Maere also features Alcest's vocalist Neige serving additional vocals on “Sing for the Damage We've Done”, while Kerim “Krimh” Lechmer took the drums throne and did a solemn job. A bizarre story concerns Audrey Sylvain, French vocalist from Malenuit who has also served guest vocals for bands like Alcest and Nargaroth; after having her record guest vocals on the song “Once upon a Winter”, the band cancelled her contribution due to her support for far-right ideologies, racism, NSBM, which the band allegedly had previously been unaware of. To conclude, Maere is a post-balck metal masterpiece and a top release of 2021, considering also the weak points. Highly recommended.
