This new Grift release is not a proper new album as Aftonklang is an unplugged live album. Releasing an unplugged live album can be a risky choice for an underground black metal band like Grift, but this also shows the complexity and the versatility of the art of the Swedish band that I have often praised in previous articles. The album contains 5 songs and is a recording from the solo concert by GRIFT at Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum, Oslo, September 16, 2018. , in which mastermind Erik Gärdefors sings and plays classical guitar.
In a statement he also explains that this concert is one of several unique solo concerts he has done in the past two years, and that the reason why he decided to have this concert recorded was that the sound in this room is absolutely amazing, since a single tone lasts for about 15 seconds. He further explains that, due to the compact darkness in the room, it was impossible to take good pictures; therefore, the photographs used for this release were taken from the solo concert in Gössäter's old stonemasonry.
The songs sound beautifully in this new acoustic form, and Erik's voice, with its melancholy and folk tone at the same time, makes the atmosphere magical. Although Aftonklang is not a real black metal album it is wonderful and is a must especially if you are already a Grift fan.
