Enthroned, one of the most important non-Norwegian black metal bands ever, has churned out one of the best albums in recent years. Their Cold Black Suns is very different from the previous relentless albums and explores new sonic territories. After five years from the previous Sovereigns, the Belgian band rises from silence with this magical album and a new experimental sound that compromises between old school black metal and post/avantgarde black metal, probably them too under the inevitable influence of French Deathspell Omega, perhaps the most influential band in modern times. However, Enthroned's approach is very personal, and you will notice this already in the slightly dissonant instrumental intro “Ophiusa”. It is difficult to indicate the best song, but it’s worth mentioning the furious “Hosanna Satana”, and the more experimental “Silent Redemption” and “Aghora”. Lyrically speaking, each chapter of Cold Black Suns has an identity of its own, exploring the different facets of the Occult, venturing into dark ambiences, high speed aggression, epic hymns, and ritualistic chambers. In conclusion, Cold Black Suns is a complex, original album, with many layers, the full appreciation of which took me many listens. Above all, it is a neglected masterpiece that you must absolutely listen to.
