From Warsaw hail Coffinwood, a black/death metal band that has just debuted with the EP Storm of Steel. According to the band, the EP's title was derived from an autobiographical book of the same name by the German philosopher and war veteran Ernst Jünger about mechanical and lethal forms of destruction of the human psyche. In actual fact, even without knowing the backstory, it is clear that war is the fundamental theme of the EP, not only because sounds related to war are constantly heard, such as explosions, marches, speeches, but also because many riffs, especially a few in tremolo picking accompanied by relentless drums, fill the EP with a stark martial atmosphere. The songs are simple and straightforward, but they vary from harsh grove to tremolo picking, and the tempo changes also vary, from blast-beat to mid-tempo, although blast-beats are generally not incredibly fast. The production is sufficiently gritty or, as we like to say, old school to satisfy the lovers of the good old sound at all costs. In short, Coffinwood does nothing transcendental, but Storm of Steel makes itself heard pleasantly. The Polish band is at least able to give its sound a personal hallmark; I'm sure they are a good live band.
