As we can easily imagine, the world created by Tolkien was and still is a source of inspiration for many metal bands. Sometimes in a direct way, sometimes in an abstract manner. In the case of Carn Dûm, the band, the inspiration seems really straightforward in their lyrics (in German). They hail from Germany, active since 2012, consisting of 4 members, and they have launched the first homonymous full-length Carn Dûm.
The music follows the muse and the aggressive and rasping black metal is sometimes imbued with folk and epic elements. No new stuff here, not the concept or the music, but the atmosphere of this undead army can please some fans of raw black metal with this kind of inspiration. Music patterns are played tremolo, slow or fast paced, sometimes even acoustic like in Wandelnd im Dämmerlicht, which is a song that joins very well the black metal and epic elements.
However, until we almost reach the first half of the album we don’t notice much change. The epic and folk-ish moments that punctuated some parts of the album would result much more interesting if they had embodied the core of the album as a whole, and not as moments without much connection.
All in all, this is a first full-length and Carn Dûm are not inexperienced musicians and work on several other bands so let’s see what they come up with on their next endeavor.
