Madame Bovary is the protagonist of the most important novel of the same name by the French naturalist writer Gustave Flaubert who in the 19th century caused a stir and scandal and was accused of immorality and obscenity. The female band Bovary, formed in 2017 in Embrun, France, to kill boredom, takes its name from this literary character. The French girls have so far released two demos, the first of which Mes racines dans le désert from 2018 was recently re-released as an LP. The demo contains three songs plus an intro and an outro. The first and eponymous track is an intro of over six minutes, and, strange to say, is longer than the first song, which is very harsh and furious, in the vein of old Darkthrone. However, the tone changes in the next two and significantly longer songs, and becomes more atmospheric, almost depressive especially in “Automme”. I would say therefore that the French girls deliver depressive black metal. The sound is spare and raw; apparently they used a Korg DP3200 multi-track to record. Some riffs or sequences may sound a bit stereotyped, but all in all the demo has personality. One limitation is the somewhat poor instrumental technique that is evident throughout the album, especially in the guitar solos. However, if you like atmospheric and depressive stuff, this is definitely something good to listen to.
