Three years after the well-acclaimed Conscious Darkness, the Polish outfit Blaze of Perdition is back with a new album, The Harrowing of Hearts, in which once again they have showcased their potential, which perhaps has not yet been fully acknowledged. The Harrowing of Hearts shows that the band, in its evolutionary path, has developed an ever-increasing atmospheric component while remaining a genuinely black metal band. Much of the overall vibes of the album is due to the work of the guitars that create a sound wall while often a lead guitar weaves a soft melody in the background, like a distant echo, thus emphasizing the sense of suffering and existential malaise; a perfect example of this are the fourth track “Królestwo Niebieskie”, and the opener “Suffering Made Bliss”. The Polish band also pays tribute to dark/gothic rock, as can be seen in “With Madman’s Faith” and “Transmutation of Sins” and especially in “Moonchild”, a Fields of the Nephilim cover. I can confidently say that this is a top black metal release in 2020, so listen to it!
