Bartlomiej is back with another EP of his side of Batushka after Raskol from last year. As usual, I will only focus on the music leaving aside any comments on the quarrel between Krysztof and Bartlomiej and which of them is the true Batushka. When we talk about Bartlomiej's new EP Carju Niebiesnyj (I use the Latin alphabet to make things easier), the question is whether we should consider it a black metal album or a Batushka album. As a black metal album, Carju Niebiesnyj is undoubtedly excellent. When Batushka split into two sides, Bartlomiej had kept the solemn and liturgical part linked to the Orthodox imagery of the original project but had lost its sonic power. This was already evident with Hospodi, the first album released by Bartlomiej. With the new EP, Bartlomiej seems to have drastically reduced what had always been his trademark, namely solemnity, and liturgical chants, except for a few traces in “Pismo V” and “Pismo VI”. Instead, he seems to have embraced a more traditional melodic atmospheric black metal. Seen in this light, Carju Niebiesnyj is excellent, but then the question is the same: should we consider it just a black metal album or a Batushka album?
