Born in 1999 in Hellas, Greece, by the hand of Stentor and Melikertiis, the band Ancestor released a demo and a full-length in the vein of thrash/heavy, just before changing name to Archemoron, and why not, change the concept and sonority also. Black metal was a better call for the group and they stuck with it, leading to several line-up changes. Archemoron is a compound word that in ancient Hellenic language translates as the “beginning of death”. Now as a three piece, the band found the necessary group cohesion needed to record this nice piece of music that is their second full-length Sulphur and Fire. Archemoron’s attitude towards black metal is expressed into their music as non-compromising, at least, committing only with a kind of black metal music with epic touches, a very dark sense of melody very reminiscent of the Greek 90s metal scene, especially Varathron.

Interesting and unique in Archemoron is the approach to their influences. They don’t really stick to a unique musical language during the entire album. That could have affected the cohesion of the whole, but it did just in part. Just listen to “I, The Black Desert”, a magnificent journey into epic black metal, and then just look for the same direction and the same feel along the other songs and you’ll probably doubt as to whether you found it. One thing is for sure, Archemoron can fight in any position they want in the field of extreme black metal, they excel in it. “Sailing to the Black Sea” and “Omnia Movens” are great examples of what these guys can do. Their riffage rocks and they have a strong sense of dynamics in their sound as much as a sense of raw energy. Recommended.
