Agrypnie (Germany): “Metamorphosis”

German black metal giants Agrypnie have been in the scene for nearly twenty years now in which they have always produced high qualitative post/black metal. I have been following this band for many years and have already highlighted their enthralling music full of nostalgic atmosphere. In this respect, Agrypnie has a unique and unmistakable sound that has become a trademark. Although the line-up was completely refurbished in 2019 after the Grenzgænger album, their sound on the new Metamorphosis album has remained essentially the same; it has evolved but has kept its original brand. Their music is meditative, profound, reflective, even in its most aggressive parts in which the pathos increases. I think a congenital drawback of Agrypnie has always been the somewhat dull growl, but Metamorphosis has more variation in this respect with some clean singing here and there, and with high-pitched growl, as in “Skulptur aus Eis”. However, it remains a difficult album to listen to because it will challenge you and require your full commitment with 11 songs and 68 minutes of playtime. Of course, it is flawless from the musical point of view, including a super production. It goes without saying that Agrypnie's Metamorphosis is an absolute masterpiece album and one of the top black metal releases in 2021. Unmissable!
